Oh, I forgot to mention--once again the Cajun food buffet was tres magnifique! I loaded up a bowl with samplings of several different dishes. One of the things I like about the food they serve at the Dearborn MG party is the fact they don't "dumb it down" by taking out all of the spices. It's nicely spiced, with great flavor. I was tempted to take a food container to sneak some of that food home, but I didn't want to be gauche, so I didn't!

I don't know about any of the other MG parties, but Maison Bleue passed a great time playing at the Dearborn party! I made a comment there that it seemed they had their most people ever at that party, and someone confirmed that. While they didn't have a dance floor set up, we had a number of folks who were dancing and having a good time. As usual, it was the kids who were less inhibited to play our extra "noisemaker" instruments (tambourines, maracas, claves, frottoir, etc). And there were even a few young gals there from Dearborn High School who talked me into putting a doubloon into the MG hat representing their school. I asked them if I could put the doubloon into the hat from Fordson HS (also in Dearborn) since Fordson HS has an old Fordson tractor in its lobby (and their sports teams are nicknamed the "Tractors" http://fhs.dearbornschools.org/About/The_Tractor_Mascot) but they were good saleswomen for their school and I ended up placing the doubloon into the Dearborn HS hat.

Cole wins the 200 cents by five minutes over Kip, although Kip gets honorable mention as he added more detail about what instruments both Buckwheat and C.J. played in Clifton Chenier's version of the Red Hot Louisiana Band!

Hi Garry,

I think I have the answer to the trivia question:

Both played with Clifton Chenier. Buckwheat Zydeco played keys in his band for a year before retiring to the woodshed to hone his chops, and C.J. played sax with his dad and later on accordion.

Did I win?!

Duh! Here I post about how The Ark hasn't had any previous zydeco acts, and then I scroll down on my very own Michigumbo blog and see that Myrick "Freeze" Guillory played there! Not to mention that I now recall that Buckwheat Zydeco played there about a year ago.

Glad you passed a good time, Mary! I've been working too many hours lately, and just didn't have the energy to get out there. Maybe this year I'll finally make it to CMU's Night of Louisiana (if my transmission holds together).

CJ Chenier was fantastic in Auburn Hills on Thursday 9/17/10, I could listen to his "Barry White" voice, and piano accordion forever. He kept the energy level high, bringing it down only once by playing "Lovebridge Waltz". Afterward, when talking to him, I think that I surprised him by knowing the title of that waltz, and in turn mentioned that it was the first tune I learned to play on the accordion. At work the next day, I hummed "Hot Tamale Baby" constantly. Was still on the Zydeco "high". He comes back to Michigan 1/29/11 at Central Michigan Night of Louisiana, I can't wait! He better bring some CD's, he didn't on Thursday night. This morning I couldn't find my copy of his CD, "Big Squeeze". So, had to pull out his daddy, Clifton, to play on my drive in to work on Friday. Not a bad compromise though, because CJ is on Alto Sax backing up his father.

Monsieur Guillaume and His Zydeco Hepcats opened the evening at Callaghan's in Auburn Hills with lots of energy. They mix it up with piano accordion, and harmonica taking turn on the lead and had lots of fun on stage. They played some Bozoo Chavez, Rocking Sydney, zydeco, blues, and original material. Callaghan's is an intimate venue, all seats are within a few feet from the stage, so there is not a bad seat in the house. There is no dance floor though, only a narrow strip of carpet near the stage. Thank you Alan, for all the great dances!
